Nano Filtration Plant
This pressure driven process is one of the most advanced separation technique, for wastewater treatment process. Here, the pore size of the membrane (0.5-1nm) as well as the trans-membrane pressure (5-21 atm) stays between those of reverse osmosis and ultra filtration.
Nanofiltration lowers TDS and hardness, reduces colour and odor and removes heavy metal ions from the water. It allows partial permeation of monovalent salts such as sodium chloride, while rejecting bivalent salts and hardness to a greater extent from aqueous solutions. It is used as a pre-treatment process to reverse osmosis, in order to reduce the load on Reverse Osmosis. It is inexpensive in comparison to RO, because of lower operating pressure and higher flow rates.
Nanofiltration is also becoming more widely used in food processing applications such as dairy, for simultaneous concentration and partial (monovalent ion) demineralisation.
